Hi everyone.
Do I miss social media? I don’t know. Not really. These days you can find content of all kinds on every platform, whether or not the social element is meant to be a part of it. You know, but I do enjoy not being locked to my phone screen on every train ride or through every silence.
I see my friends who have become addicted to something that doesn’t quite feel as dangerous as cigarettes, but somehow has become just as life threatening. It’s a little bazaar, but I guess that’s the world we live in these days.
Anyways, the things I miss the most about my feed was the on the ground updates that felt like they happened in real time. Now I just wait for my most trusted writers and independent journalists to polish their reports and post them a day behind. So I’m still just as saddened by my screens as anyone else.
It feels impossible to untangle yourself from the ungodly hold these tech boys have gotten us into. I can’t live without it. Literally. You can’t do anything without an email or a phone to link to your accounts, I need to use my smart phone to verify everything I do, and the penny just went extinct, so it looks like we are weening ourselves off of tangible finances. As if it wasn’t vile enough that I’m required to have a bank account if I want to maintain a job or have a home.
As for social connections, I haven’t lost much of anything. I manage to stay connected to many people in my life in other ways. Long phone conversations for my far away friends or sending letters and gifts in the mail. I’ve been hosting some old fashioned sleepovers with my friends in the city and I’ve joined a monthly figure drawing class I heard about in a friend of a friend’s apartment. I stay connected with the city events and protests through flyers, word of mouth, and just showing up places where things are happening. So socially, I maybe even feel more fulfilled than I did when I was watching everyone and everyone was watching me through a screen.
So anywhere i can cut back, avoid paying into their abominable scheme to rule the world like opting to not use social media, the better. It’s kind of just the least I can do. Reserve the real thanks to everyone who is actually out there in the streets in places like Minneapolis fighting fascism like hell. We owe it to them to do what we can.
And that’s why I’m here. I’m tired of tech. I’m tired of it all. But I’m learning how to exist differently and without meta or x or that damn clock app. You can keep up with me here for now, that is, whenever I remember to keep this updated.
And never forget – FUCK ICE & FREE PALISTINE. <3
